European encyclopaedia of surface technology

Objective

Several vocational education projects carried out under COMETT and Leonardo have shown that a lack of foreign language proficiency represents the main problem in transnational vocational training activities. The aim of this project is to help facilitate and promote the capacity for communication of those working in the field of surface technology and comprising groups of people from various occupational areas and with differing levels of vocational training by means of targeted training of specialist language skills. The objective of the project is to develop a multimedia specialist lexicon of surface technology terms in seven languages (English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Danish and Greek).

The dictionary will be produced as a multimedia information system on CD-Rom and include animations, video sequences, spoken text sequences, etc. Besides its use as a multilingual specialist lexicon and technical dictionary and the associated conveying of subject-specific information, the CD-Rom will also provide the possibility for extending subject-specific language skills through the incorporation of training units. The multimedia design of the programme will facilitate self-learning in the areas of writing, reading, listening and speaking. The diversity of the areas of application of surface technology means that the range of those able to benefit from this programme is spread very widely; they include young employees, trainers, workers in companies, young people in vocational training, planners and directors of initial and continuing vocational training programmes, management personnel in SMEs, vocational training directors, teaching staff, students, representatives of sectoral organisations, companies engaging in initial and further vocational training activities, vocational schools, private and public initial and further vocational training institutions, universities, as well as all producing companies and sector-specific research institutes, architects, construction design consultants, industrial designers and interpreters.

Impact
The development of a subject-specific lexicon in the form of a multimedia self-learning product will promote the dissemination and application of new information technologies. In addition, an educational product will be created which will encourage self-study for company employees.
