Objective
Emphasis on the care and protection of the environment in the European Union offers opportunities for innovative project work with pre-school and primary aged children. Co-operation between education providers and environmental associations would help to raise the awareness of environmental education and training in the school curriculum. The objective of this pilot project is to establish a work experience facility for the development of a vocational training programme for inclusion in nursery and primary teacher training. A team of Swedish teachers will build an ecological greenhouse and 'henhouse' that will facilitate transnational exchanges and offer teachers, students and children the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of environmental systems.
The partnership will record and evaluate the outcomes of the project for the development of an environmental training component for integration into the school curriculum. The introduction of a European dimension will help to promote the concept to other interested parties in other member states.
Impact
This innovative project will directly impact upon nursery and primary teacher training and foster life-long awareness of the importance of the care of the environment as part of holistic education. The facility will provide a unique vocational training model for others to follow.
