Objective
The regions of Austria, Germany and France involved in the VERENA project are experiencing economic difficulties through the loss of certain industries and are therefore endeavouring to develop a socially and ecologically adapted tourist sector. This type of "gentle" tourism requires a particularly sensitive form of controlling and caring for visitors. The aim is for the people trained through this project (qualified or apprentice tourist guides and people working in the tourism sector) to pass on complex regional contexts to visitors.
VERENA is directed primarily at young and older employees, disadvantaged groups, the unemployed and job-seekers. The planned training programme is designed to equip already qualified tourist guides with additional skills in conveying regional knowledge. In addition, it is hoped people from the regions referred to will be motivated into training to become tourist guides. This will result in new jobs - particularly of a part-time nature - in disadvantaged regions as there is a consistent demand for such qualified people, particularly in tourism organisations. The training programme can also be used in other regions by adapting the specific content accordingly.
Impact
The aim of the training programme under development is to provide the possibility for creating new jobs in the tourism sector and guaranteeing employability. It is foreseen both to integrate the training measures in the existing training offer and to ensure their certification.
