Establishing continuous biomarker monitoring for Big Data in fitness and healthcare

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - eCONFIDENCE (Establishing continuous biomarker monitoring for Big Data in fitness and healthcare)

Período documentado: 2021-01-01 hasta 2022-06-30

Goal of eCONFIDENCE was to evaluate possible commercial applications of a multi-sensor test strip for applications in healthcare and fitness. Such a multi-analyte sensor can be used to calibrate the millions of data points generated by wearables every day to improve the accuracy of non-invasive sensors.

Within the project we designed a screen printable layout for a multianalyte test strip that is compatible with the oxygen scavenger developed in the ERC Starting Grant REDOX SHIELDS. A pair of sensing enzymes was demonstrated at the laboratory scale to be compatible. These enzymes can detect the analytes glucose and lactate. The analytes have diagnostic value for applications in healthcare and fitness.
Furthermore, we did a first market evaluation by interviewing medical experts about biomarker pairs of interest. The experts identified several pairs of biomarkers that are of interest for healthcare or fitness. They also pointed out how monitoring of these biomarkers together with “classical” biomarkers like heart rate, oxygen saturation and movement tracking might be beneficial.
For future commercialization plans it is necessary to identify the regulatory requirements early on. That is why we contracted a report on regulatory requirements. This report will serve as a guideline for future exploitation activities.
The medical experts identified several sex-specific biomarkers of interest. With our future R&D activities, we have the opportunity to develop a multi-analyte biosensor test strip that will enable personalized recommendations and thus eliminate potential sex bias in diagnostics.
