Continuing training in tourism-related SMEs to take account of the challenges set by the European Charter for sustainable tourism in the natural and national parks of Europe

Objective

The aim of this project is to support tourism managers in protected areas through continuing training. The will include the principles of sustainable development set out in the European charter for sustainable tourism in the natural and national parks of Europe.

This project involves the establishment of the experimental training needed to test new processes and new products which will promote sustainable development in the tourism and hotel sector before it is disseminated to SMEs in the tourism sector.

The first step is to create the essential tools, in particular the training kit, the eco-audit kit and the syllabuses. Then, a guide to sustainable environmental management and a guide to enhancing actions in favour of sustainable development will be developed, together with a guide to good practice. All these training tools will be disseminated in several different languages and in a common format. A training programme for trainers from universities and training centres will be set up. The effectiveness and relevance of the training tools and a pilot scheme will be assessed in ten pilot parks.

A European communication strategy will enable the results to be disseminated through the formation of a network of universities and training centres in the vicinity of the parks. These bodies will deliver training and training tools to the SMEs in the 700 natural and national parks around Europe.

Impact
This project will enable the signatories to the European charter for sustainable tourism in the natural and national parks of Europe to show their commitment to it in a practical way.
