Foreign Language Learning on the World Wide Web

Objective

The European Trade Union College (ETUCO) has taken note that the need for foreign language skills and transnational communication amongst trade union leaders, officers, representatives and members has grown, especially since the recent arrival of European Works Councils. This target group has experienced considerable difficulty in attending foreign language courses in the country of the target language. The project will therefore develop a means by which they can follow a foreign language learning course which is independent in its own right, but which also permits access to traditional courses.

The project will develop on-line and open learning language courses for English, French and German, at intermediate level. World Wide Web pages will be prepared in such a way as to be user friendly, flexible and motivating. They will offer interactive teaching and learning possibilities. These on-line courses will be embedded in a concept of distance learning in that they will be accompanied by self-study phases, e-mail discussion groups, white-boarding and, where possible, residential courses.

The themes to be dealt with are: cooperation at European level; women and the world of work; and European Works Councils. The products will include: three modules per language on the internet; one teachers guide per language; and an audio cassette with self-study materials.

Impact
The project will promote autonomous and life-long learning. The target group will be able to have authentic contact with foreign learners and colleagues.
