Objective
Nowadays, because of the multi-national nature of their guests, Hotel personnel across Europe need to demonstrate a knowledge of other cultures and languages if they are to provide the best service. International hotel chains also expect a high degree of mobility from their workers.
The most important aim of this project is to devise and coordinate an international training curriculum and a Europe-wide procedure for the reciprocal recognition of training qualifications in hotel management. A prerequisite for this is that the curricula in the EU countries will have to be modified. The subject area must be enlarged, within the framework of school education and (if applicable) in firms, to include occupationally relevant know-ledge in the areas of European law, European marketing, environmental technology, and communi-cation technology. In addition commercial management training must be intensified and occupationally relevant knowledge will have to be taught in two or three foreign languages. Graduates will receive a certificate with the additional qualification "hotel management."
To try out the new concept, two periods abroad in partner countries will be carried out, each of three to six months, divided into a course of about four weeks with the instructional emphasis on language and geography and a practical training period of up to five months in a hotel. The graduates will then be awarded the "European qualification." In view of the different educational systems, the new training program will be directed at higher-school graduates in Germany, but in other EU countries such as France and Italy at young adults who are working for the university entrance qualification at the same time as their vocational training.
Impact
By training highly qualified workers to meet actual needs, the diverse range of educational programs will increase the competitiveness of hotels and restaurants, improve graduates' career prospects in this country and abroad, and promote their mobility.
