Modular catch-up training. Dissemination in EU and Central and Eastern European countries

Objective

In the Federal Republic of Germany there are about 1.6 million people who have not obtained any recognised vocational qualification. In the SPREAD project, young adults with no vocational qualifications in the construction industry will be trained up from labourers to skilled workers. Using new methods, SPREAD will make this plan widely accessible to the trade in Europe and to small and medium-sized firms.

The project partners will utilise the experience already gained in other Leonardo da Vinci projects in the area of catch-up training. This will relate to (among other things) curricula; learning materials and suggestions; and a self-instructional software package for carpenters, which was first developed for "Catch-up Training in Employment" for construction labourers, to enable them to get a recognised external qualification as a skilled worker in the field of carpentry or bricklaying from the Chamber of Handicrafts. To meet the requirements of SMEs, the teaching material will be usable in the workplace without time constraints, and must take account of the users' requirements with regard to the vocabulary of the trade, time constraints, and qualifications provision.

An innovative feature of the project is that Hungary, as a central or eastern European country, will be actively involved in the further development of the "Catch-up Training in Employ-ment" plan and in testing the teaching material. In disseminating the continuing education plan, the project partners will not concentrate solely on traditional dissemination channels but will present the product at trade fairs, to specialist associations in this country and abroad, and to trade organisations.

Impact
SPREAD will promote the establishment of a catch-up training plan in the European vocational training systems, taking into account the economic realities and the needs of the training companies.
