Objective
This project will develop a new system for validating language skills based on the "portfolio of competence philosophy". The aim is to design a European reference system for auditing, identifying, measuring and validating language skills in the work place.
The partners will define key work-based language competence in four skills areas, and relate them to specific professional sectors and activities. They will then devise a system enabling trainers to assist candidates in building up portfolios of language competence. Links will be established between existing language certificates and diplomas so that candidates can gain easy access to both diploma-based and competence-based means of validation. A trainer-training package for language trainers will be designed to equip them with the skills needed to validate linguistic competence on the basis of valid and reliable evidence produced in daily work situations.
The reference system, which will be applicable to any European language, will make a valuable contribution to the transparency and mutual recognition of levels of linguistic competence throughout the EU. The end product will enable European citizens to seek accreditation for language skills acquired through formal training or directly through their jobs.
Impact
As a result of this project, workers will have a lifelong opportunity to validate their language skills acquired through training or directly in their working environment. Companies will be able to have a clear idea of the linguistic potential of their staff.
