Objective
Throughout Europe the high level of adult unemployment has led to an increase in the number of retraining programmes aimed at providing adults with skills appropriate for the workplace and to improve their opportunities to gain employment. The aim of this project is to evaluate the effectiveness of a range of 'return to work' programmes across Europe in assisting mature women trainees to make a sustainable return to employment, and to identify good practice both in training provision and induction arrangements for new employees (focusing particularly on communication and information technology skills).
This survey involves comparative research into retraining programmes for women in four European countries : France, Ireland, Spain and UK. Through questionnaires, in depth and group interviews the research will compare the experiences of mature women returners on 'return to work' programmes and on their progression into and experiences of employment. To achieve this and to evaluate the effectiveness of returner programmes, and the use and benefits of the newly developed skills in IT and communications, the study will concentrate on the perspectives of three groups: women trainees; course providers; and employers.
The recommendations for course design and good practice in preparing women trainees for employment and companies' induction arrangements will form the basis for manuals of good practice and materials for returner programmes in a further Leonardo da Vinci pilot project.
Impact
The survey will ensure a close match between skills and experience developed by women trainees and those required by companies.
