An anaerobic digestion power plant for citrus fruit residues

Objective

The overall objective is to promote the use of Bioenergy in the EU by demonstrating in innovative application that of anaerobic digestion of citrus fruit residues on a medium scale for which a large market is known to exist. The project will also have a significant effect on the socio-economic aspects of sustainable development and will be assisting the EU towards meeting its Kyoto obligations. The project will demonstrate the continuous availability of citrus residues feedstock, i.e. the continuous feeding and operation of the anaerobic digestion plant with an innovative processing of the biomass to allow for medium-term storage and the effective anaerobic digestion of citrus fruit residues in a wet digestion system for the conversion into exploitable biogas that can he converted to thermal energy (steam) to be used on site and supplied to the juice factory, achieving significant fossil fuel energy savings and also to electrical energy to use on sit and sell to the grid.
