Objective
The main objective of the Action is to maximise the social and economic benefits of defence restructuring and conversion by giving added value to on-going national research on the economic, social, technological and cultural elements shaping this process.
The Action aims to contribute to the identification of under-researched areas and the stimulation of new research projects at national and international level. Also, it should improve the social science content of conversion research in a number of ways.
Current status
By the end of December 1996 nine countries had signed the Action. Sweden and the Netherlands are in the process of signing.
The first Management Committee meeting took place in December 1996. At this meeting delegates agreed on a workplan for 1997. It was considered to set up an initial number of three Working Groups for the following subjects :
regional conversion;
restructuring of defence industries;
cultural issues.
The MC also agreed to submit an application for getting a subvention for Short-Term Scientific Missions.
Work planned
A compilation will be made of the current status of on-going research in member countries, including regional aspects and the private sector.
A preliminary set of questions for studies on the restructuring of the defence industry will be considered at the next meeting. The same will be done with the subject of cultural issues relating to conversion (such as public opinion and threat perception)
