Biomedical Equipment Assessment and Management

Objectif

BEAM is a project aiming to establish a solid inter-European system for the effective management and assessment of biomedical technology, that should be able to exploit the enormous amount of information produced continuously in different countries, introduce new standards and tools for the management of medical equipment in the hospital and promote Quality Assurance methods in the field.
Research has been carried out on the development of a consistent frame the management of all kind of information related to medical technology. This in availability of medical devices and equipment across Europe, cost effectiveness procedures and the training of technical personnel.

The main products to emerge from the biomedical equipment assessment and managem (BEAM) project are:
a prototype system for the comprehensive management of biome technology;
databases covering comparative evaluation reports, information on de throughout Europe, quality assurance procedures for medical equipment and relate will be extractable from local databases;
a system for the access of heterogeneo transparent way for the user;
software tools to support the quality assurance of and a product assisting quality control services;
a facility for easy exchange o to biomedical technology among clinical engineers across Europe.
The main products to emerge out of BEAM are:

- A prototype system for the comprehensive management of biomedical technology. Emphasis is given to the establishment of a sufficient number of common descriptors, not sensitive to local administrative details, in order to facilitate exchange of information and the management of not only medical equipment but also of clinical engineering departments.
- Data bases covering comparative evaluation reports, information on devices available throughout Europe, Quality Assurance procedures for medical equipment and related data which will be extractable from local databases.
- A system for the access of heterogeneous databases in a transparent way for the user.
- Software tools to support the Quality Assurance of Medical equipment and a product assisting Quality Control services (PANDA).
- A facility for easy exchange of information related to biomedical technology among clinical engineers across Europe.

Thus, the BEAM system will be a management and informatics tool supporting Clinical Engineering departments, in order to assure reliable and safe use of medical equipment. It will also contain a compilation of information as well as communication facilities for exchange and access of this information. In effect, BEAM will comprise an integrated facility to help the Clinical Engineers meet the challenges of their increasingly demanding field.

As a whole the BEAM project is expected to significantly contribute towards achieving a common European consensus in the field of biomedical technology management, while at the same time it will improve the quality and cost effectiveness of health care.

BEAM has already drawn the attention of the Clinical Engineering Community and we have a good number of letters from professional societies, organisations and hospitals expressing this interest. BEAM will also provide output to standardisation bodies. The report on the establishment of a common European Codification Classification and Nomenclature system for medical devices has been submitted to DG III for consideration.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
