Exploitable results

CABSINET overcomes one of the remaining hurdles to the information revolution: providing low cost, easily installed, high data rate connections to business users and consumers in 'the last mile'. Low power cellular wireless techniques offer an attractive solution for interactive services. A single transceiver station can serve hundreds of users across a radius of several kilometres, and can be mounted on a high building or existing aerial tower. Users can choose an external antenna for larger data rates or an internal antenna for portability around the home. A transceiver unit connects to a Set Top Box that in turn connects to the TV/ multimedia PC. The system uses COFDM (Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex) modulation and a combination of 40GHz & 5.8GHz carriers to provide a high capacity, robust signal that is capable of building penetration with minimal effects from precipitation or obstacles. The CABSINET project is a consortium of twenty companies and includes some of Europe's leading manufacturers, operators and research houses. The first operational demonstration has been shown at IBC'98 Exhibition in September 1998, with full system trials planned for March 1999. Project URL: http://www.fub.it/cabsinet/home.htm
