Advanced resource management in service integrated and multi-layered hfc access networks

Objectif

Main Objective

The overall objective of AROMA is to contribute to the integration between ATM and the Internet. It will design, implement and demonstrate flexible generic solutions, which advance the integration of services with end-to-end QoS (Quality of Service) in multi-layered Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFC) systems. This integration will be pursued on two fronts: 1.adding QoS sensitive support to Internet protocols for enhancing legacy TCP/IP applications 2.defining native ATM architectural solutions to provide QoS support for new applications. This strategy accommodates the existing applications and provides an open environment for embedding new ones into HFC networks.

Technical Approach

The project will demonstrate how intelligent resource management can provide end-to-end QoS in a heterogeneous network environment. This environment consists of an HFC access network as a shared medium, an SDH/ATM core network with ATM signalling (ITU-T: Q.2931) and Internet including RSVP (Resource Reservation Protocol). The main issue is the smooth end-to-end operation of IP and native ATM applications using different types of protocols (RSVP, ATM traffic contract ) to offer guaranteed QoS. In particular the HFC network segment requires novel methods of resource management by means of signalling between the user terminals and a legacy ATM switch via an HFC-specific management unit. A novel approach is required to embed HFC (shared medium) access networks in an SDH/ATM network and Internet environment. It involves switched connections in order to use the network resources efficiently and dynamically and to provide QoS simultaneously. (In existing ATM based HFC systems permanent connections are established). AROMA will develop and demonstrate this approach.

Summary of Trial

Components of the resource management platform, such as ATM signalling, RSVP end host and routing unit, enhanced MAC protocol and CORBA/Java-based management utilities, will be installed and integrated into the CATV test fields in Portugal, Germany and Romania from the beginning of 1999. Verification measurements will be performed during the integration. In addition, tele-working and tele-learning applications, based on the native ATM protocol or the RSVP protocol, will be demonstrated in the CATV field environment from the middle of 1999.
Expected Achievements

QoS-on-demand for end-to-end application on both the IP and ATM layers throughout the HFC access network and the core ATM network.

Expected Impact

The QoS- and SVC-based end-to-end connection will provide HFC network operators with the flexibility to deliver Internet services, with a range of QoS options, to a large number of end-users and charge them accordingly. A contribution will be made to the ATM forum RBB working group and the IEEE802.14 working group on verifying and stabilising the ATM signalling service for HFC access network and on the dynamic MAC protocol. The CORBA/Java-based management agents and consoles will enable the HFC network components to be smoothly integrated into an existing managed IP/ATM network.

Taken together, these developments will help the HFC access network to evolve towards a full service-integrated and managed network.
