Objectif
Main Objective
MOSQUITO deals with the Management of Quality of Service in Digital TV operations, either over satellite, cable or terrestrial networks. The ultimate objective is to monitor the Quality of Service over each point in the network. This is extremely important to network operators and programme providers. It will also offer users a higher quality service. European DVB (Digital Video Broadcasting) standards will make Digital TV increasingly free of borders within the continent. Network operators will become more involved in the transmission process and will be able to guarantee that the digital TV signal is correctly passed from one part of the network to the other.
This project complements the work of QUOVADIS. It is now possible to define complementary studies that will ensure comprehensive integration of the "Quality of Service" concept into all aspects of future digital television services and take into account relevant results from other ACTS projects.
Technical Approach
MOSQUITO will focus on a number of Quality of Service issues for Digital Television which could not be considered in QUOVADIS. These include the interaction between quality parameters, e.g. there is a known interaction between perceived picture and sound quality. This has implications for the overall perceived Quality of Service and merits further study. These studies will be based on objective and subjective assessments from QUOVADIS and complementary studies in MOSQUITO.
Another very important aspect is the optimisation of the agreed QoS Channel. The Packet Identifier (PID), defined by the DVB consortium, reserves space for QoS parameters. It is important to investigate how to use this facility and how to optimise and standardise it to resolve the various interoperability issues. MOSQUITO will also focus on the Quality of Service of Digital Television via ATM circuits, since these packet based networks have their own particular potential QoS problems. The time discontinuities, which can arise during ATM transmission, make it necessary to monitor special parameters, such as jitter and "wander". These problems require further investigation, in order to ensure optimum QoS via ATM networks.
For network management QUOVADIS adopted a TMN (Telecommunication Management Network) approach to QoS. MOSQUITO will enhance this Quality Management System, with network and service information coming from the network devices. Another crucial technique that needs to be investigated is statistical multiplexing, since it affects the quality of the picture. Finally, MOSQUITO will study the quality of data transmission (Electronic Program Guide, Associated Data, Return Channel), which was not considered by QUOVADIS.

Summary of Trial
Trials integration is a key element of MOSQUITO. Not only will it extend the trials carried out by QUOVADIS on the French National Host Platform, but it will also be able to validate other results on another DVB-T (DVB Terrestrial broadcasting) platform located in Bavaria and on an ATM plus DVB-T platform in Sweden. The three trials will integrate and validate the equipment developed by MOSQUITO for TMN and will study the impact of different Digital TV transmission scenarios on the final quality of the signal.
The modification of the network or T&M (Test and Measurement) equipment in order to adapt them to the format of the data associated with the measurement PID, will also be carried out on the French National Host.

-Presentations and demonstrations of the whole QoS Management System The Mosquito physical architecture
Expected Impact
MOSQUITO will change the way network operators monitor Quality of Service on future Digital TV networks. Manual checking of programme quality will be replaced by automatic, TMN based, supervision of the network.

Contribution to the programme
The results of the MOSQUITO project have created confidence in to the user of new DVB technologies for broadcasters. The trials performed within the project have increased the expertise in this domain that is essential to set up new services.
