Objectif
Main Objective
HYPERMEDIA will investigate the handling and delivery of continuous multimedia (audiovisual) material in a hypermedia service environment. Such an environment allows users to navigate in hyperspace and explore databases owned by the various players in the service chain (content providers, network providers, service providers etc). HYPERMEDIA's users will be professionals - the communications and media organisations who are the service providers for the general public.
User requirements are evolving and the most significant development is demand for improved navigation techniques. This implies that multimedia services will have to evolve into hypermedia services.
HYPERMEDIA will develop video indexing tools that increase the possibilities for interactivity. Service providers and other professional users will be able to use these tools on their audiovisual materials to offer improved navigation and search facilities.
There is a clear market opportunity for services that handle and deliver continuous audiovisual materials. This 'continuous audiovisual market' will have a value chain of services. HYPERMEDIA will demonstrate a solution addressing all aspects of this market (metadata, video indexing tools, databases architecture, network architecture, Intellectual Property Rights services) and develop an exploitation plan based on the results of its trial.
Technical Approach
HYPERMEDIA's technical approach consists of the following activities:
-The definition and implementation of a database architecture and internal data structure for audiovisual materials, which will optimise access and navigation capabilities in a client-server environment. The navigation facilities will rely on WWW technology and gateways to DBMSs; using descriptors (registration cards), which rely on de-facto or de-jure metadata standards.
-The development of video indexing tools to complement the registration card of the audiovisual material with a number of video descriptors. These tools will be tested with selected video sequences from news and movies. The tools and descriptors will be developed in close conjunction with standardisation working groups, ACTS projects (e.g. DICEMAN and CustomTV) and other relevant initiatives.
-The definition of a network system architecture and the implementation of a service deployment trial based on Common Access Points (CAPs) belonging to service providers. These CAPs will incorporate a help desk to capture feedback and problems during service deployment. This help desk will also be the basis for the evaluation of the trial. The trial system will integrate all the developments mentioned above and will include interactive networks with cable and satellite segments that can handle DVB/MPEG-2 signals. As well as adding value to the audiovisual contents, the CAPs will include a brokerage mechanism for the next step of the service chain (professional customers searching for materials from a range of content providers).
-The definition and implementation of security mechanisms to address the IPR aspects of audiovisual materials. This will rely on existing standards and work carried out in projects from various European Programmes (e.g. COPEARMS and IMPRIMATUR from ESPRIT; OCTALIS, OKAPI, and TALISMAN from ACTS). The implementations will include mechanisms for IPR management and protection (watermarking, labelling, and fingerprinting), and access control.
Summary of Trial
The trial will use a Common Access Point (CAP) belonging to Telefónica. The users will be RAI and TVE.
Expected Achievements
-A field trial providing experience of the continuous audiovisual market.
-Definition of an access policy and distribution channels for customers and content providers, including navigation-through distributed databases of audiovisual materials.
-Definition of metadata descriptors for audiovisual materials, which improve navigational capabilities and the value added in the service chain.
-Contributions to advances in video indexing tools and video descriptors generation.
-Definition of a policy for security and IPR issues for audiovisual materials.
-An exploitation plan based on the results of the trial.
Expected Impact
HYPERMEDIA will contribute to the definition of audiovisual contents descriptors through research, backed up by an extended field trail, on content based video indexing. These are the precursors for the development of the continuous audiovisual market. They will allow users to navigate through databases of audiovisual materials belonging to various service/content providers and access the items of interest to them. These descriptors and the Common Access Point (CAP) for information access will provide a clear market opportunity for service providers.
Main contributions to the programme objectives:
Main deliverables
Definition of a Continuous Audiovisual Market concept, providing a realistic service pilot to validate it. This concept allows the user to navigate in the hyperspace through databases belonging to different actors of the service chain.
Contribution to the programme
Contribution to the normalisation of audiovisual content descriptors by means of a extended field trial, plus research on content based video indexing. This will allow to all European users to access and navigate through audiovisual materials belonging to service providers and content providers. A Common Access Point for information access, will provide a view of the continuous audiovisual market with interest for service providers.
Key Issues
-Development of the Continuous Audiovisual Market in Europe.
-User requirements for the service on a Pan-European basis.
-Metadata for audiovisual materials, as well as coding and parsing tools for video indexing.
-Database architecture for browsing and retrieval of audiovisual materials,
-Network and system architecture for service deployment.
-IPR requirements and services.
