Objectif
Main Objective
The Multimedia domain is converging. Users want seamless integration of services and application regardless of the specificities of networks (LAN, WAN, Satellite, Cable, Terrestrial Broadcast, etc.) , platforms (PC, Set Top Box) and formats (WWW, MHEG, MPEG, etc.).
It is the main objective of the project to provide a convergence strategy that will allow applications and services to be deployed across the targeted infrastructure taking benefit of a set of common tools and interfaces which guarantee true end to end interoperability.
Technical Approach
Standards bodies are aware of the need to provide converging technology in the multimedia domain in order to make the market grow and to build the customers confidence. However, it is difficult for the players involved to have a complete overview about all relevant activities that are going on in the individual organisations involved. Consequently the first objective is to make sure that the information flows between DAVIC, DVB and the IETF are working correctly and that when new solutions are designed care is taken not to re-invent the wheel.
Moreover, a set of tools will be designed to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed technical approach.
The main activities are:
-DAVIC Internet Convergence
-DAVIC-DVB Convergence
-Authoring Tools
-Public Awareness Actions
DAVIC Internet Convergence
-A DAVIC (DSM-CC) server will be enhanced to support also the protocol stacks for multimedia over IP (RTP, RTSP, etc.). This will allow content providers to offer the same content on two different platforms using a single server.
-A client protocol stack will be developed allowing an application to dynamically select the appropriate technology for a given scenario.
-An application will be developed which demonstrates the benefit of having DAVIC and IP technology available at the same time in one application.
DAVIC-DVB Convergence
-A Set Top Box (STB) will be developed supporting the DAVIC 1.4 software architecture including a set of standardised APIs.
-DAVIC 1.4 will be promoted within DVB Multimedia Home Platform (MHP). This would actually mean full convergence of the standards in this domain.
-An application will be developed exploiting the capabilities of this DAVIC-DVB compliant STB. The application will be based on a broadcast of a Formula 1 car race.
Authoring tools
-Authoring tools will be developed which allow the creation of a DAVIC-DVB application at a similar cost to a CD-ROM application. Public Awareness Actions
-The project will organise public workshops and will try to help consensus formation between the individual standards organisations.
Summary of Trial
The trial will be organised in La Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie (CSI). CSI is a public scientific and cultural institution created in 1986. Its goal is to disseminate scientific and technical skills to the general public from the age of three through to adulthood. The institution hosts five million visitors a year, of which 1.9 are fee-paying patrons.
The Project will use a DAVIC compliant platform of CSI to support high-quality distributed multimedia applications that will be accessible to the public in the exhibitions.
The interactive application will be integrated in a Formula 1 Broadcast and demonstrate the TV experience possible through enhanced digital broadcast and the new software architecture for Set Top Boxes.
Expected Achievements
1. An integrated DAVIC-Internet Multimedia Server will be developed
2. An integrated DAVIC-Internet Multimedia client will be developed
3. An application will be developed demonstrating the benefits of the selected approach
4. A DAVIC-DVB compliant STB will be developed
5. An application will be developed demonstrating the capabilities of this new technology
6. Authoring tools will be developed allowing the production of a DAVIC-DVB application at a similar cost to a CDROM application.
7. A demonstrator will be developed and exhibited in a public scientific and cultural institution which is visited by five million visitors a year.
Expected Impact
1. Technology convergence in the area of high-quality audio-visual services (DAVIC, DVB, Internet)
Main contributions to the programme objectives:
Main deliverables
Novel versatile multimedia servers capable of hosting, encoding and transmitting interactive applications for interactive digital TV according to DVB-MHP specifications. A novel multimedia authoring system that makes possible the production of broadband multimedia services or multimedia Internet applications at low cost.
Contribution to the programme
The CODID projects has pushed forward the concepts and underlying technologies of the convergence of Digital TV, Telecom Services and Internet. CODID has been active in the standardisation of technologies in DVB, DAVIC groups.
