Civil aircraft protection against ice

Résultats exploitables

Fundamental aspects of ice protection have been investigated. The programme has involved both theoretical and experimental work and was split into 2 main areas. Firstly, ice mechanics: examination of impact ice; mechanics of ice at high strain rates; dielectric properties of ice and water; and emissivity of ice. Secondly, definition of the ice protection requirements for a hypothetical aircraft: assessment of various ice protection concepts; review of systems against the requirements with a decision to carry out further work on with a decision to carry out further work on electroimpulse deicing (EIDI) and microwave technology; development and testing of 2 selected concepts. A considerably improved knowledge of ice physics has been developed, specifically in the areas of ice mechanics, adhesion, emissivity and dielectric properties. The design and initial development of EIDI technology was carried out and testing of the system fitted in metal and composite leading edge sections was completed. The development of microwave technology has been carried out at a much more fundamental level and it has been possible to assess the basic feasibility of the concept for aircraft ice protection.
