The whole crop biorefinery project

Objetivo

The objective of this large integrated project is to prove, on a sufficiently large scale, that the BIOREFINERY concept is economically and technical viable. A pilot plant will be installed by the participants which will allow assessment of the synergistic effects expected from integrating different process lines into one plant.
The objective of this large integrated project is to prove, at a sufficiently large scale, that the biorefinery concept is economically and technically viable. A wide selection of plants from the harvest of 1991 were analyzed for their suitability for whole crop usage. Whole crop harvested winter wheat and winter rape has been stored for up to 6 months by different storage methods to determine possible methods of intermediate storage. Parallel to the storage experiments a high capacity wet separator has been developed. The biorefinery pilot plant was built during 1991 and the equipment and machinery has been installed. The final testing of the machinery is finished and the research and development work has started.
The success of a BIOREFINERY depends, as for each industrial processing of biological raw material, on the quality of this raw material. Therefore the project will look into the selection of crops which are particularly promising for the whole crop BIOREFINERY concept. The problems of intermediate storage will also be addressed because this is a key issue in spreading the raw material supply over a longer period of time than the harvesting period, thus increasing the utilization period of the BIOREFINERY equipment.

Drying and dry separation of the crops can be carried out sufficiently well by the participants in the project, and they will therefore concentrate their R&D efforts on three lines of fractionation which will be tested in batch and in continuous trials. These are:
enzymatic aqueous extraction of rape seed oil and recovery of protein and starch will be tested at pilot scale as well as the liquefaction of starch;
a simplified mechanical fractionation of wheat and maize grains will be developed and tested up to pilot scale, allowing for the integrated production of food flours, industrial flours and feed ingredients;
the mechanical, dry fractionation of whole crop harvested crops (eg green-to-yellow ripe barley, lucerne and peas), straws (from barley, wheat and rape seed).

The products achieved from these fractionation processes will be tested; the feeds and feed ingredients through feed trials.

The work on systems analysis and the economic assessment of the BIOREFINERY approach will guarantee the consistency and sufficiency of the data generated and will provide a much improved basis for the evaluation of this approach. Concurrently with the technical biological projects, models will be constructed to describe the commercial full scale biorefinery. In so doing, requirements for capacity, product mix, capital contributions and expenditures will be eludicated so that the project will be carried out in the light of requirements made by the BIOREFINERY system. The models will be utilized for economic evaluations of the BIOREFINERY systems and the potentials of those systems in agriculture and industry as seen from a European perspective.
