European research on aircraft ice certification

Exploitable results

The EURICE project is fundamentally aimed at carrying out a co-ordinate effort in Europe to examine current aircraft icing problems and the related certification process, operation procedures and flight standards. In principle the results of this research could be used as a scientific platform by JAA to start a revision process of part of the JAR and the advisory material, or to address further research activities in specific selected areas. An important goal of the project is therefore to establish a positive trend in icing research in Europe where many remarkable efforts on national basis are ongoing (France, UK, Germany) but without a co-ordinate action. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS A database of icing incidents/accidents has been prepared and this database has been disseminated among the partners. The database has been used by RAI and University of Pisa to obtain some statistics on icing incidents/accidents, by Agusta to individuate icing helicopter incidents/accidents and by DLR to individuate incidents that can be used as case study for a more detailed meteorological analysis. The main results form the incidents/accidents data-base, is that in the last years the rate of icing incidents/accidents is not decreased. In addition to the incidents/accidents data-base, a database on icing atmosphere has been developed and implemented. A link with non-European institutions has also been implemented to allow an exchange of information (the database contains also FAA data). This data-base could be used as a base in the framework of the FAA/JAA requirements of definition of a revised Appendix C. The data-base has been implemented on an Internet site (http://eurice.cira.it) and is world wide available.
