The main objective of this work programme is the provision of the first instance of a validation platform capable of supporting the large scale demonstration and validation initiatives of the European Commission, Eurocontrol and all others concerned with validation of the EATMS. Based upon a selection of CNS/ATM components representative of state of the art developments in Europe and of the EATMS concept, the platform shall also be capable of integrating any potentially representative candidate product: it shalll be an open, flexible and modular environment system which must enable evolution, integration, interoperability and growth.
Given the scale and co-ordinated nature and the complexity of the whole EATMS validation process, the following properties are required for this platform:
£ Easy dissemination to a wide variety of validation sites
£ Easy configuration to support integration of other components
£ Flexibility allowing evolution and local adaptations
£ Integration possibility of future components
£ Co-ordinated experimental protocol to support distribution of the validation process as well as large scale exercises
£ Possible use to ease the transition of legacy system toward EATMS/ Strategy 2000+
As a consequence, AVENUE project aims to develop the 5FP validation platform by:
- the conduct of a validation platform requirements capture;
- the specification and system architecture of the platform;
- the adaptation of selected ATM system components;
- their integration on to the platform;
- the demonstration of the developed facilities suitability for use as an EATMS validation platform.

A number of the projects conducted under the first and second calls of the EC's 4th FP have prepared the way for the development of an ATM validation facility: those projects concerned with the validation methodology (ASIVAL, GENOVA and CASCADE); and those projects concerned with the prototyping/development of ATM tools.Under this category, development has included: the functional architecture (FARADEX), the platform (PATIO); the advanced tools (CINCAT) CNS/datalink EOLIA FARAWAY & ProATN.
