OPTAS - TASK 4.3.2/45 PART A OF THE 3RD CALL. THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION FRAMEWORK 4 RTD PROGRAMME

Exploitable results

The objectives of the project were: - To use and evaluate a suite of airside and landside simulation tools for use in the conduct of a set of case studies to evaluate the potential capacity impacts of a range of initiatives likely to be introduced at European airports in the next 7 to 10 years. - To evaluate the applicability of using the techniques of System Dynamics (SD) to develop a fast runtime, high level modelling tool (the SD Model) which integrates the airside and landside of an airport. The prototype-modelling tool developed has made it possible to evaluate the feasibility of using SD to implement rapid-time, macroscopic models that integrate the airside and landside. It was found that the potential advantages offered by this approach include: - Ease of use. - Fast run-time. - Access to a wide range of output data, thereby providing many options for analysing the results of simulations. - A viable way forward for modelling the airside/landside interface. The applicability of the modelling approach was found to vary considerably between different airport subsystems, and this necessarily affects the range and scope of scenarios for which tool would be most suitable. For those subsystems for which the approach is suitable, however, the tool performed well.
