RESEARCH ON THE PRODUCTION OF HIGH QUALITY CASHMERE FROM GOATS AND ITS POTENTIAL FOR AGRICULTURAL DIVERSIFICATION

Objectif

The project seeks to undertake research crucial to the development of systems of production of high quality cashmere in EC countries and to assess its potential as a viable alternative agricultural enterprise (diversification) having regards to its effects on the environment and on rural economies.

Research will be conducted to improve the quality and yield of cashmere goats by genetic selection, as well as on the physiology of fibre growth. Participants intend to develop new methods of measuring fibre characteristics. Research on reproductive physiology and biotechnology will also be undertaken. The effects of change of the environment and of nutrition on fibre characteristics will be estimated. The economic and social viability of cashmere goat farming will be assessed.
