SELECTIVITY OF GILL NETS IN THE NORTH SEA, ENGLISH CHANNEL AND BAY OF BISCAY

Objectif

The objectives are to obtain measurements of the selectivity characteristics of commercial gill nets and to demonstrate how these can be used in models describing the exploitation of fish in community waters.

Phase 1 will determine the gill net fisheries and gears to be studied. National studies will be made of the catch values and relative importance of the different Danish, French and British gill net fisheries in the North Sea, Channel and Bay of Biscay.

Phase 2 will determine the experimental techniques to be used in the selectivity experiments.

Phase 3 measures and analyses gill net selectivity on commercial vessels over a 2 year period.

Phase 4 will demonstrate how the selectivity measurements can be applied to management problems.
