COMBINING HIGH PROLIFICACY AND MEAT QUALITY IN SHEEP PRODUCTION BY INTRODUCING THE FECUNDITY GENE IN DIFFERENT REGIONAL SHEEP PRODUCTIONS RESULTING IN A HIGHER INCOME PER EWE AND LESSER EWE PER SURFACE UNIT

Objective

The project utilizes crossing the FEC gene in less prolific breeds, and local breeds with high carcass quality aiming to realize the combination of high fertility and excellent meat quality. It aims to realize the soluble aim in a multidisciplinary approach (zootechnical, genetic and physiological).
1. Zootechnical will study and compare the characteristics of the reproductive capacity of crossbred ewes;
2. Quality aspects of the carcass composition and meat characteristics of the slaughter lambs; and
3. Physiological aspects of the increased ovulation rate of the FEC gene carrier ewes will be studied.
