MONITORING AND MANAGING CHANGES IN RURAL MARGINAL AREAS - A COMPARATIVE RESEARCH

Objective

The project focuses on specific problems of marginal areas in relation to EC policies, particularly CAP reform, rural development and regional and environmental policies. Considering land use changes as key factors in the evaluation of these areas, the research will examine how they are influenced by policies and compare the process in various marginal areas in countries with a different historical evolution and development level: Portugal, Denmark, Belgium.

Objective 1 is to understand farmers' strategies towards changes in EC policies as farmers are the main users of land. Recommendations for changes in policy should follow.

Objective 2 is to elaborate methodological tools which can analyze and anticipate the evolution of land use at the regional level. The research aims to build a common methodology and to test use of similar models in the different study areas.
