AGRI-ENVIRONMENTAL MEASURES AND WATER QUALITY IN MOUNTAIN CATCHMENTS

Objetivo

Agricultural practices are damaging the environment and the quality of ground water, in particular by using, in big quantities, organic or mineral fertilisers and pesticides. It is therefore necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of the different agri-environmental measures in order to keep or to restore the quality of ground water. This research is particular to mountain or sub-mountain regions and will analyze the whole circulation system from the surface to the water bodies through the aquifers. The project gathers socio-economists, biologists and hydrogeologists from Austria, France and Switzerland and deals principally with the inter-relation between socio-economy and biophysics. It is subdivised in three main parts:
- Surface investigations under socio-economicals aspects;
- Subsurface investigations under hydrogeological aspects;
- Multidisciplinary analysis of the results.
An action plan, in collaboration with farmers, decision-makers and researchers will be elaborated to recommend the less pollutant land use practices and the more economical solutions. The results of the project will be used as reference terms for the notion of 'Hydrological park'.
