ASSESSMENT AND IMPROVEMENT OF THE RECYCLING CHARACTERISTICS OF VEGETABLE OIL BASED INKS FOR USE WITH NEWSPRINT AND LASER PRINTED PAPERS

Objetivo

This prenormative research project will assess, evaluate and improve the deinkability of newsprint and laser printed papers printed with vegetable oil based inks.

This will be enhanced through

- the assessment of the deinking characteristics of newsprint and laser printing samples printed with commercially available vegetable oil based inks and deinked with conventional chemicals.

- the assessment of the relative effects of vegetable oil based ink components on deinkability;

- formulation of deinking chemicals suitable for use with vegetable oil based inks;

- formulation of vegetable oil based inks that meet printability and deinkability requirements;

- validation of the deinking characteristics of selected vegetable oil based inks on a semi-industrial scale and the preparation and quality assessment of 'new' paper from the deinked pulp.

The successful outcome to the project will have wide ranging benefits beyond the printing/paper sector, as it will provide market opportunities for agricultural industry to develop a wider range of non-food crops as feedstocks for ink formulations and will prevent the possible development of inks which could be detrimental to the recycling process.
