TRACK-STRUCTURE DETECTORS FOR NEUTRON AND ALPHA DOSIMETRY

Objetivo

THE MAJOR SCOPE OF THIS RESEARCH PROPOSAL IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF THOSE DETECTING METHODS WHICH REGISTER FAST NEUTRONS AND HIGH-LET PARTICLES WITH VERY LARGE SENSITIVITY AND ARE COMPLETELY INSENSITIVE TO SPARSE RADIATION. THESE NEW DETECTORS ARE BASED ON THE SAME PROPERTIES OF HIGHLY IONIZING PARTICLES WHICH DETERMINE THEIR HIGH BIOLOGICAL EFFECTIVENESS, NAMELY THE HIGH-ENERGY DEPOSITION AT MICROSCOPIC AND SUBMICROSCOPIC DISTANCES FROM THE PARTICLE TRAJECTORY IN DIFFERENT MATERIALS SUCH AS INSULATORS AND SEMICONDUCTORS. BECAUSE OF THESE REGISTRATION CHARACTERISTICS, THEY ARE REFERRED TO AS NUCLEAR-TRACK STRUCTURE DETECTORS. ANOTHER IMPORTANT CHARACTERISTIC, IS TO USE THE HIGH-ENERGY DEPOSITION IN THE VICINITY OF THE TRACK TO INITIATE AMPLIFICATION OR AVALANCHE-TYPES OF PROCESSES WHICH CAN BE EASILY DETECTED.
THESE DETECTORS CAN BE DIVIDED INTO TWO CATEGORIES:
A. DAMAGE TRACK REGISTRATION BY CHEMICAL AND ELECTROCHEMICAL ETCHING
B. HEAVY ION COUNTERS BY THE INDUCTION OF CHARGES, CURRENT PULSES AND BREAKDOWNS IN BASIC ELEMENTS OF MICROELECTRONICS SUCH AS MOS, CCD, RAM ETC.
The solutions to many problems in neutron dosimetry (for personnel, area and environmental monitoring) may be achieved through the optimisation of the electrochemical etching parameters such as electric fields, temperature and frequency. The major scope of this work is to demonstrate how it is possible to obtain any desired neutron dosimeter response through a proper choice of the parameters of the electrochemical etching of CR-39 detectors.

Studies conducted are as follows:
neutron dosimetry by damage track detector: advantages and limitations;
applied personal dosimetry by chemical etched CR-39 dosimeters;
the assessment of low concentrations of alpha emitting radionuclides.
