Objective
THIS PROPOSAL WILL PROVIDE MORE INFORMATION ON DOSIMETRY FOR THE PROTECTION OF WORKERS AND THE POPULATION. DEVELOPMENT OF DOSIMETRIC METHODOLOGY FOR A BETTER EVALUATION OF ORGAN DOSES.
THE PROPOSED RESEARCH IS A JOINT PROJECT BETWEEN THE IGT/KERNFORSCHUNGSZENTRUM KARLSRUHE AND THE DIVISION OF RADIOBIOLOGY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH (USA). THE AIM OF THIS COLLABORATIVE PROJECT IS TO DETERMINE THE MECHANICS OR THE INDUCTION OF BONE TUMORS IN DOGS AND MAN BY ALPHA-EMITTING RADIONUCLIDES FROM THE NUCLEAR FUEL CYCLE IN ORDER TO PROVIDE BETTER RISK ESTIMATE MODELS FOR MAN.
The microdistribution of the radiation dose from internally deposited radium 226, plutonium 239, and americium 241 in selected bones taken from beagle dogs in the University of Utah have been studied. This has improved the understanding of the mechanisms of bone tumour induction in dogs and man by alpha-emitting radionuclides from the nuclear fuel cycle and provides better risk estimate models for man.
Work has been carried out to determine the microdistribution of the radiation dose from internally deposited radium-226, plutonium-239 and americium-241 in selected bones taken from beagle dogs in the University of Utah life span studies. This has helped to improve the understanding of the mechanisms of bone tumour induction in dogs and man by alpha-emitting radionuclides from the nuclear fuel cycle and so to provide better risk estimate models for man.
THE MICRODISTRIBUTION OF THE RADIATION DOSE FROM INTERNALLY DEPOSITED 226-RA, 239-PU AND 241-AM WILL BE MEASURED IN BONES TAKEN FROM BEAGLE DOGS IN THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH LIFE-SPAN STUDIES. THE DOSIMETRIC MEASUREMENTS WILL BE MADE ON AUTORADIOGRAPHS OF BONE SECTIONS, USING ALPHA-PARTICLE OR NEUTRON-INDUCED AUTORADIOGRAPHY WITH SOLID STATE DETECTORS, BY MEANS OF COMPUTER ASSISTED SCANNING TECHNIQUES DEVELOPED AT IGT AND THE RADIOBIOLOGY DIVISION.
SPECIAL EMPHASIS WILL BE PLACED ON THE MEASUREMENT OF RADIATION DOSE TO ENDOSTEAL SURFACES OF BONE FROM THE "VOLUME-SEEKER" 226-RA AND THE "SURFACE-SEEKERS" 239-PU AND 241-AM AND THEIR COMPARISON. RADIATION DOSES WILL BE DETERMINED WITH RESPECT TO TYPE OF OSTEOGENIC CELL AND KNOWN PARAMETERS CHARACTERIZING BONE TURNOVER AND CELLULAR KINETICS. IT WILL BE ATTEMPTED TO EXPLAIN EXPERIMENTALLY FOUND TOXICITY RATIOS BETWEEN VOLUME-SEEKERS AND SURFACE-SEEKERS ON THE BASIS OF RADIATION DOSE RATIOS. IF SUCCESSFUL THIS WOULD PROVIDE A SOUND BASIS FOR EXTRAPOLATING RADIATION RISKS FROM ANIMALS TO MAN. OTHER OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY WILL BE TO TEST THE HYPOTHESIS THAT OSTEOSARCOMA INDUCTION IS PROPORTIONAL TO THE AVERAGE RADIATION DOSE DELIVERED TO CELLS AT RISK AND ALSO TO IDENTIFY THESE CELLS..
