BEHAVIOUR OF LONG-LIVED RADIONUCLIDES IN TERRESTRIAL AND MARINE ENVIRONMENTS

Objective

- STUDY OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL BEHAVIOUR OF RADIONUCLIDES.
- COLLECTION OF DATA NECESSARY FOR MODELING THE RADIONUCLIDES TRANSFER.
Two models were developed to simulate the transfer of radioactive iodine and caesium through the grass cow milk pathway. These proved useful for radiological assessments of accidental releases to the atmosphere. The predictive accuracy of the models appears to be within a factor of 2 when compared with Chernobyl data from Denmark. However, the transfer of radio iodine from the atmosphere to the ground is more uncertain due to the chemical speciation of this element.

Experimental studies in the marine environment have included measurement of the turnover of radionuclides in bioindicators, as well as field studies in the North Atlantic region and the Baltic sea, and also Thule studies.

Dynamic models have been developed of the human food chain to assist in the determination of less well known, but long lived, radionuclides. The 2 models developed to simulate the transfer of radioactive iodine and caesium through the grass cow milk pathway are useful for radiological assessments of accidental releases to the atmosphere.
1. TERRESTRIAL ENVIRONMENT :

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
