CONSEQUENCES OF SEA DISPOSAL

Objective

A new numerical stratified model of general ocean circulation has been developed in France. A series of simulations was carried out to compare this model with an American model and a number of numerical initialisations have been performed using foreign data.
A NEW STRATIFIED MODEL OF GENERAL CIRCULATION HAS BEEN DEVELOPPED. IT IS A MODEL FOR PREDICTING THERMODYNAMICS AND THREE-DIMENSIONAL DYNAMICS ON AN OCEAN SCALE. THE MODEL IS A CLASSICAL ONE, BASED ON THE SOLUTIONS TO THE PRIMITIVE EQUATIONS (CONSERVATION OF THE MOMENTUM, OF MASS AND OF THE QUANTITY OF TRACERS: HEAT, SALT, ETC.). THE MODEL IS IDENTICAL FROM THE PHYSICAL STANDPOINT TO THE BRYAN-SEMTNER MODEL USED IN THE USA. THE DIFFERENCE IS IN THE NUMERICAL METHOD, USE BEING MADE OF THE ARAKAWA C GRID. IN ADDITION, THE EQUATIONS ARE FORMULATED IN COORDINATES CONFORMAL TO THE SPHERICAL COORDINATES AND THIS ALLOWS A VARIABLE GRID STEP IN X-Y-Z. A COMPLETELY VECTORIZED CODE IS OPERATIONAL ON CRAY-1.
A PROGRAM OF INTERCOMPARISON WITH THE MODELS USED BY THE AMERICANS AND THE GERMANS HAS BEEN DEFINED. IT INVOLVES RUNNING THE MODEL ON A RECTANGULAR OCEAN BASIN WITH A FLAT BOTTOM COMPRISING 25 POINTS FROM EAST TO WEST, 2 POINTS FROM NORTH TO SOUTH AND 6 VERTICAL POINTS BEGINNING AT 15 DEGREES NORTH WITH A HORIZONTAL RESOLUTION OF 20 DEGREES.

1 JULY 1985 - 1 JULY 1986
A PROGNOSTIC SPIN UP WILL BE CARRIED OUT OVER 50 YEARS, OR 10 000 TIME STEPS, WITH GIVEN INITIAL AND BOUNDARY CONDITIONS. THE UNITED STATES WILL CONTINUE THE CALCULATIONS UNTIL EQUILIBRIUM IS ATTAINED AND WILL PROVIDE THE OTHER PARTICIPANTS WITH THE U, V, T AND S VALUES AT EQUILIBRIUM SO THAT THE VARIOUS COUNTRIES CONCERNED WILL BE ABLE TO STUDY THE SALT AND HEAT BALANCES AT THE DIAGNOSTIC EQUILIBRIUM.

1 JULY 1986 - 30 JUNE 1987
THE RESULTS OBTAINED DURING THE FIRST YEAR WILL OBVIOUSLY GUIDE SUBSEQUENT INTERCOMPARISON WORK. IT IS ALREADY HOPED THAT IT WILL BE POSSIBLE TO INTRODUCE A ROUGH BOTTOM TYPOGRAPHY (MAINLY THE MID-ATLANTIC RIDGE).

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
