ETUDE DU METABOLISME DE LA TOXICITE REELLE DES COMPOSES D'URANIUM EN SITUATIONS INDUSTRIELLES EN VUE DU REEXAMEN DES NORMES DE L'ICRP

Objective

THE WORK FOLLOWS AN EARLIER STUDY CARRIED OUT DURING THE LAST THREE YEARS IN THE FRAME OF CONTRACT B10-D-372-F. IT AIMS TO ASCERTAIN WHETHER THE OBSERVATIONS MADE IN FRANCE AND OTHER MEMBER STATES OF THE COMMUNITY WITH RESPECT TO THE TREATMENT OF URANIUM COMPOUNDS IN AN INDUSTRIAL ENVIRONMENT ARE IN AGREEMENT WITH THE ICRP RECOMMENDATIONS AND, IF NOT (AS IS SUPPOSED FROM THE BASIS OF STUDIES CARRIED OUT IN FRANCE) WHAT AMENDMENTS TO ICRP SHOULD BE PROPOSED.
IN A GENERAL WAY, THE WORK INVOLVES
ASPECTS:
- OBSERVATIONS IN AN INDUSTRIAL ENVIRONMENT
- EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES
- EVALUATION OF THE RESULTS, THEIR SYNTHESIS AND RESULTING PROPOSALS.
Numerous observations have been made, notably on uranium fluoride, which have determined the direction of in vitro and in vivo experiments. It was found that carrying out a rapid analysis of urine following an incident resulted in poor quality measurements. Radiotoxicological measurements are necessary for the calculation of equivalent effective doses in chronic cases and following incidents.
THE COMBINED INDUSTRIAL AND SCIENTIFIC CONDITIONS IN FRANCE ARE WELL SUITED TO CARRYING OUT SUCH A PROJECT SINCE THERE IS ACCESS TO INDUSTRIAL CONDITIONS IN COOPERATION WITH THE HEALTH AND SAFETY MEDICAL STAFF, MULTIDISCIPLINARY SCIENTIFIC GROUPS ETC...
1. OBSERVATIONS IN AN INDUSTRIAL ENVIRONMENT
THEY WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN WORKERS UNDER REAL INDUSTRIAL CONDITIONS. STUDIES WILL CONTINUE ON EXCRETION AND RETENTION OF URANIUM (BASED ON ANALYSIS OF BIOLOGICAL SAMPLES AND THE WHOLE BODY) IN WORKERS WHO HAD BEEN EXPOSED TO DIFFERENT URANIUM COMPOUNDS (UF4, UO2 F2, UO2, U308; NATURAL AND ENRICHED). THE STUDIES ARE CARRIED OUT UNDER DIFFERENT EXPOSURE CONDITIONS (CONTINUOUS, AFTER TERMINATION OF EXPOSURE...) ON INDIVIDUALS AND ON GROUPS OF INDIVIDUALS. THE CONDITIONS OF EXPOSURE WILL BE ANALYSED (TYPE OF AGENT, CONCENTRATION, BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY...). THUS, A MAP WILL BE DRAWN PRESENTING IN THE DIFFERENT INDUSTRIAL INSTALLATIONS ACTUAL EXPOSURES TOGETHER WITH OBSERVATIONS IN MAN. OUR PREVIOUS STUDIES AND ELABORATED PROTOCOLS INDICATE THAT SUCH OBSERVATIONS IN INDUSTRIAL ENVIRONMENTS ARE FEASIBLE AND WILL YIELD A SPECTRUM OF CORRELATIONS EXPOSURE - BIOLOGICAL PARAMETERS.
2. EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES
URANIUM COMPOUNDS FROM THE SAME INDUSTRIAL SOURCES AS THOSE WHICH ARE STUDIED IN WORKERS WILL BE INVESTIGATED:
- BY ANALYSIS: GRANULOMETRY, EXACT CHEMICAL COMPOSITION
- IN VITRO: TEST OF SOLUBILITY OF THE DUSTS IN SYNTHETIC MEDIA
- IN VIVO: RETENTION AND URINARY OR FECAL EXECRETION FOLLOWING INHALATION.
IN ADDITION, SIMILAR EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES WILL BE CARRIED OUT ON DUSTS FROM ENGLAND AND, IF POSSIBLE, FROM CANADA AND THE USA. THESE DIFFERENT INVESTIGATIONS WILL ALLOW THE DEFINITION OF THE PHYSICOCHEMICAL AND METABOLIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE POLLUTING AGENTS.
3. DATA EVALUATION AND SYNTHESIS
THE DATA WILL BE ANALYSED AND CORRELATED TO GIVE INFORMATION ON THE REAL CHARACTERISTICS OF INDUSTRIAL URANIUM COMPOUNDS IN THE COMMUNITY. IN THIS WAY, A MODEL CAN BE ELABORATED OR, AT LEAST, THE METABOLIC PARAMETERS CAN BE DEFINED FOR THE ENTRY, RETENTION AND ELIMINATION OF URANIUM BY THE ORGANISM.
4. PROPOSALS FOR REGULATION
THE METABOLIC DATA THUS OBTAINED WILL BE USED TO PROPOSE, IF NECESSARY, A REVISION OF THE RECOMMENDATIONS OF ICRP WITH RESPECT TO URANIUM.
