STUDIES OF THE MECHANISM AND PREVENTION OF LOW DOSE RADIATION CARCINOGENESIS OF THE THYROID

Objective

THIS WORK IS DIRECTED TO ANSWERING THREE MAIN QUESTIONS RELATED TO RADIATION CARCINOGENESIS IN THE THYROID. WHAT IS THE QUANTITATIVE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LOW DOSE RADIATION AND TUMOUR DEVELOPMENT. WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE GROWTH STIMULATORY EFFECT OF TSH ON TUMOUR DEVELOPMENT. WHAT IS THE VALUE OF TSH SUPPRESSION IN THE PREVENTION OF RADIATION INDUCED THYROID TUMOURS.
The results of a study of the rate of onset of focal hyperplasias (FH) and of adenomas (A) in the thyroid after a single dose of radiation followed by prolonged goitrogen therapy were of considerable interest. The study showed that the FH numbers increased linearly with time after radiation, but that A numbers initially increased more slowly and later increased more rapidly. The FH size profile remained almost unchanged with time, while the A profile showed a higher mode than FH and a much greater increase in higher diameter lesions with time. Both the change in absolute numbers and in diameter profile are consistent with a progression of FH to adenoma in the genesis of thyroid neoplasia.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
