THE AEROSOL SIZE DISTRIBUTIONS AND THE UNATTACHED FRACTION OF THE RADON DAUGHTERS FOR ESTIMATION OF THE RADIATION EXPOSURE RISKS IN HOUSES

Objective

- EVALUATION OF RADIATION RISKS FROM ALL RADIATION SOURCES AND OPTIMIZATION OF RADIOPROTECTION.
- THE RADIOLOGICAL BURDEN OF MAN FROM NATURAL RADIOACTIVITY.
Measurement of the aerosol size distributions and the unattached fraction of radon daughters has been carried out for estimating radiation exposure risks in houses. The results of measurements of the unattached fraction (fp) show that most published calculations of the natural radiation exposure of the human public is based on incorrect values of the unattached fraction of the short lived radon decay products. Under normal conditions (closed room without aerosol sources (eg bedroom)) the mean fp value of 0.095 is 3 times higher than proposed in the literature. Only in rooms with additional aerosol sources (cigarettes, smoke, aerosols from cooking) and in outdoor environments, are the aerosol particle concentrations high enough to give an unattached fraction equal to or smaller than 0.03.
AIM OF THE RESEARCH IS TO MEASURE THE INDOOR AND OUTDOOR ACTIVITY SIZE DISTRIBUTIONS OF THE RADON DAUGHTERS TO ASSESS THE INFLUENCE OF THE NATURAL AEROSOL CONCENTRATION AND CIGARETTE SMOKE ON THE ACTIVITY SIZE DISTRIBUTIONS, AND INTERCOMPARISONS WITH OTHER AEROSOL MEASUREMENTS.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
