EVALUATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF MODELS USED IN ASSESSING THE CONSEQUENCES OF ACCIDENTAL RELEASES OF RADIOACTIVITY

Objetivo

COMPUTER CODE FOR EVALUATING THE HEALTH AN ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF ACCIDENTAL RELEASES OF RADIOACTIVITY ARE BECOMING AN IMPORTANT AID IN MAKING DECISIONS RELATING TO THE SAFETY, SITING AND DESIGN OF NUCLEAR REACTORS. CURRENTLY THERE IS CONSIDERABLE INTEREST IN IMPROVING THE REALISM OF THE MODELLING UTILIZED IN SUCH CODES, WHERE THE PRESENT TECHNIQUES CAN BE SHOWN TO SIGNIFICANTLY LIMIT THE QUALITY AND RELIABILITY OF THE RESULTS. HOWEVER, SINCE THE APPLICATION OF SUCH CODES TYPICALLY INVOLVES CALCULATIONS FOR MANY DIFFERENT COMBINATIONS OF INPUT PARAMETERS (EG WEATHER CONDITIONS, RELEASE CHARACTERISTICS, POPULATION DISTRIBUTION) COMPUTATIONAL SPEED AND FLEXIBILITY ARE PRIME REQUIREMENTS, AND THERE WILL CONTINUE TO BE A STRONG INTEREST IN SIMPLE PARAMETERIZED MODELS. IN THE PROPOSED CONTRACT, MORE FUNDAMENTAL APPROACHES WILL BE DEVELOPED AND USED TO ASSESS THE RANGE OF APPLICABILITY OF SIMPLE MODELS AND TO FORMULATE MODIFICATIONS WHERE APPROPRIATE.
Lagrangian particle techniques (often called Monte Carlo methods) are being increasingly considered both directly for assessments or to provide references against which simpler models can be tested. A rigorously defined method for dealing with realistic deposition levels at the ground has not been previously developed.
This work breaks new ground in establishing the correct approach for the particular type of Lagrangian particle model utilised. The model has the potential, therefore, for finding applications in a wider variety of situations.
THIS CONTRACT WILL CONCENTRATE, IN THE MAIN, ON THE MODELS USED IN THE ATMOSPHERIC DISPERSION/DEPOSITION PHASE OF THE CALCULATIONS. A NUMBER OF ASPECTS OF THE SIMPLIFIED APPROACHES CONVENTIONALLY USED IN ASSESSMENT WORK ARE IN NEED OF EXAMINATION FROM A MORE FUNDAMENTAL VIEWPOINT. EXAMPLES OF THESE INCLUDE : THE MODELLING OF DRY DEPOSITION TO SURFACES OF DIFFERENT TYPE (INCLUDING CROP CANOPIES); MODELS FOR CALCULATING EXTERNAL DOSES IN THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT; THE MODELLING OF WET DEPOSITION; DISPERSION/DEPOSITION MODELLING IN COMPLEX TERRAIN AND SUBJECT TO TIME-VARYING METEOROLOGY; THE DISPERSION/DEPOSITION MODELLING OF 'HEAVY' PARTICLES (IE PARTICLES SUBJECT TO APPRECIATE GRAVITATIONAL SETTLING).
INVESTIGATION OF CHOSEN ASPECTS OF THE TECHNIQUES WILL LEAD TO AN ESTIMATION OF THE IMPACT OF CERTAIN MODELLING SIMPLIFICATIONS ON THE END-POINTS OF THE CONSEQUENCE-ASSESSMENT PROCESS AND WILL LEAD TO SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVMENT WHERE APPROPRIATE.
CARE WILL BE TAKEN THAT THIS PROGRAMME OF WORK DOES NOT DUPPLICATE THAT PROPOSED BY OTHER ORGANISATIONS WORKING IN THE AREA OF CONSEQUENCE ASSESSMENT, AND, TO THIS PROGRAMME OF WORK DOES NOT DUPLICATE THAT PROPOSED BY OTHER ORGANISATIONS WORKING IN THE AREA OF CONSEQUENCE ASSESSMENT, AND, TO THIS END, CONTACTS WILL BE MAINTAINED WITH THE NATIONAL RADIOLOGICAL PROTECTION BOARD (NRPB) AND THE KERNFORSCHUNGSZENTRUM KARLSRUHE (KFK)
