Objective
IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND THE RADIOBIOLOGICAL RESPONSE OF EUKARYOTIC CELLS IT IS NECESSARY TO STUDY THE INDUCTION OF THE CRITICAL MOLECULAR DAMAGE BY IONIZING RADIATION AND ITS REPAIR/MISREPAIR. THE OBJECTS OF STUDY WILL INCLUDE YEAST CELLS AS WELL AS HUMAN AND OTHER MAMMALIAN CELL LINES. EVIDENCE, DERIVED FROM SEVERAL SOURCES INCLUDING OUR OWN LABORATORIES IMPLICATES THE DNA DOUBLE-STRAND BREAKS (DSB) IN BOTH CHROMOSOME ABERRATION INDUCTION AND CELL KILLING AFTER EXPOSURE TO IONIZING RADIATION.
THE INVESTIGATIONS WILL BE EXTENDED TO INHERITABLE GENETIC CHANGES (POINT MUTATIONS) IN HAPLOID YEAST CELLS.
Work is concerned with monoenergetic low energy electron irradiation of yeast and mammalian cells to study the induction of cell killing and aberrations, mutations and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) double strand breaks as a function of electron energy.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
