Objective
THE AIM OF THE WORK PROPOSED IS TO STUDY, MAKE AND TEST A HIGH-PERFORMANCE PERSONAL NEUTRON DOSIMETER COMPRISING A RADIATOR AND A DETECTOR.
ONE OF THE BASIC OBJECTIVES IS CONSTANT SENSITIVITY AS A FUNCTION OF THE NEUTRON ENERGY ("FLAT RESPONSE"), WHICH SHOULD MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO USE A SINGLE DOSIMETER FOR THE WHOLE ENERGY RANGE (FROM THERMAL TO FAST NEUTRONS).
The investigations involved:
calculating dosimeter responses for neutrons;
developing a composite radiator detector system based on CR39;
experimental testing of the developed dosimeter.
The study and development of a high performance personal neutron dosimeter have been carried out, along with the development of a composite radiation detector system based on CR39, and experimental testing of the developed dosimeter.
THIS STUDY REQUIRES EXAMINATION OF THE FOLLOWING POINTS:
A. CALCULATION OF THE RESPONSE OF THE IRRADIATED DOSIMETER TO NEUTRONS, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE ALBEDO. PRELIMINARY STUDIES CARRIED OUT AT L.E.P.O.F.I. HAVE SHOWN HOW CERTAIN PARAMETERS HAD TO BE MODIFIED TO INFLUENCE THE DOSIMETRIC EFFICIENCY VALUE AT THE HIGHER ENERGY LEVELS (EXPERIMENTAL CHECKS HAVE BEEN MADE). WITH THIS IT IS POSSIBLE TO ENVISAGE A CONSTANT EFFICIENCY FOR FAST NEUTRONS AND TO EXTEND THESE RESULTS TO THE LOW ENERGY LEVELS.
LIKE THE TEAM'S EARLIER STUDIES, THOSE PROPOSED HERE CAN BE APPLIED TO ANY DETECTOR USED IN THE "RADIATOR + DETECTOR" CONFIGURATION.
B. THE PRODUCTION OF A COMPOSITE RADIATOR FOR FAST AND THERMAL NEUTRONS IS ENVISAGED WITH THE AID OF TECHNIQUES WHICH THE LABORATORY MASTERS: ION PLATING AND/OR ION IMPLANTATION (L.E.P.O.F.I.'S 400 KV ACCELERATOR).
THE PROBABLE SOLUTION WILL BE POLYETHYLENE FILM, IN OR ON WHICH THE NECESSARY QUANTITY OF CONVERTER ATOMS (N, ALPHA), WILL BE DEPOSITED.
C. CHECKING WILL BE CARRIED OUT ON THE DOSIMETER IN ITS FINAL CONFIGURATION EITHER AT SITES EXPOSED TO NEUTRON FIELDS OR IN THE CONTEXT OF THE JOINT IRRADIATION CAMPAIGNS CONDUCTED BY THE EURADOS-CENDOS WORKING GROUP TO WHICH THE TEAM BELONGS. THIS CHECKING DEPENDS ON MASTERING THE USE OF THE SOLID-STATE TRACE DETECTORS EMPLOYED (CR 39, POSSIBLE ALSO CN 85), WHICH WILL BE CALIBRATED FOR PROTONS, ALPHA PARTICLES, CARBON, OXYGEN (PROBLEM OF PARASITIC RESPONSES).
