BEHAVIOUR OF RADIONUCLIDES AND MODEL DEVELOPMENT IN AQUATIC ECOSYSTEMS

Objectif

A. RADIOECOLOGY OF RIVER ECOSYSTEMS
THE MAIN PORTUGUESE RIVERS HAVE THEIR ORIGIN IN SPAIN, WHERE AN ELECTRO-NUCLEAR PROGRAMME IS ALREADY IN PROGRESS, SOME OF THE NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS (IN OPERATION, UNDER CONSTRUCTION OR PROJECTED) BEING ON THEIR RIVERSIDES.
THEREFORE, THEIR RADIOECOLOGY NEEDS TO BE WELL-KNOWN AND PRIMARILY THAT OF RIVER TEJO. ONLY ABOUT ONE THIRD OF THIS ONE CROSSES PORTUGAL, THE OTHER TWO THIRDS, SINCE THE RIVERHEAD, RUNNING THROUGH SPAIN. THE N.P.P. OF ALMARAZ IS ABOUT 100 KM UPSTREAM FROM THE PORTUGUESE BORDER.
THE MAIN PURPOSE OF THIS RESEARCH PROJECT IS TO OBTAIN A BETTER KNOWLEDGE ON THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE RADIONUCLIDES RELEASED INTO THE FRESHWATER ENVIRONMENT AND ON THE UPTAKE MODALITIES BY THE AQUATIC ORGANISMS. THEREFORE, IT WILL COVER THREE ITEMS:
1. FIELD STUDY OF RIVER TEJO RADIOECOLOGY
2. RADIOECOLOGICAL EXPERIMENTS ON A TROPHIC CHAIN FROM THE FRATEL DAM, ON THE TRANSFER OF CO-60 THROUGH A SIMPLIFIED TROPHIC CHAIN CONSISTING ON A PRIMARY PRODUCER (ALGAE), A PRIMARY CONSUMER (SMALL CRUSTACEAN) AND A SECONDARY CONSUMER (FISH).
3. FROM THE RESULTS OF THE FIELD AND LABORATORY STUDIES IT IS EXPECTED TO ESTABLISH AN EXPERIMENTAL BIOLOGICAL TRANSFER MODEL FOR CO-60, WITH THE AIM OF FORESEEING THE CONSEQUENCES OF THE DISCHARGE OF RADIOACTIVE EFFLUENTS INTO THE RIVER.
ON THE OTHER HAND, A MATHEMATICAL SIMULATION MODEL WILL BE DEVELOPED FOR PREDICTING THE RADIONUCLIDES TRANSPORT ALONG RIVER TEJO.
B. BEHAVIOUR OF RADIONUCLIDES IN THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT. THE GENERAL PURPOSE OF THIS RESEARCH PROJECT IS TO STUDY THE DISTRIBUTION AND BEHAVIOUR OF THE MORE SIGNIFICANT NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL ALPHA-EMITTERS IN THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT.
Experiments on cobalt-60 transfer in a simplified trophic chain from the Fratel dam and its behaviour in water sediment interactions were carried out. A computer model was used to simulate radioisotope distributions using 1 varying parameter and a specific mathematical model for radionuclides was implemented.
1.A) COLLECTION OF GENERAL DATA FROM RIVER TEJO,
B) DETERMINATION OF THE PHYSICO-CHEMICAL QUALITY OF THE RIVER WATER,
C) CHARACTERIZATION OF THE SEDIMENTS,
D) CHARACTERIZATION OF THE RIVER FAUNA AND FLORA,
E)ANALYSIS OF THE MAIN METALS IN WATER AND AQUATIC ORGANISMS,
F) DATA ON THE CONCENTRATION OF NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL RADIONUCLIDES IN WATER, SEDIMENTS AND BIOTA.
2. THIS STUDY WILL INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING STEPS:
A) STUDY OF THE TROPHIC CHAIN
- ABSORPTION AND LOSS IN A SPECIES OF ALGAE
- ABSORPTION AND LOSS IN A SPECIES OF CRUSTACEAN
- ABSORPTION, DISTRIBUTION AND LOSS IN A SPECIES OF FISH.
B) STUDY OF RADIONUCLIDES ADSORPTION AND DESORPTION BY SEDIMENTS (AND POSSIBLY BY SUSPENDED MATTER)
- CONTAMINATION OF SEDIMENTS AND KD EVALUATION
- INFLUENCE OF ORGANIC MATTER ON KD.
3. THIS PROJECT WOULD BE INTEGRATED AS FAR AS POSSIBLE IN THE COORDINATED PROGRAMME ON THE RADIOECOLOGY OF RIVERS IN COLLABORATION WITH CEA/CEN, CADARACHE, THE CEN/SCK, GEEL, AND THE IUR WORKING GROUP ON THE RADIOECOLOGY OF MAJOR RIVERS.
4. IT HAS BEEN RECENTLY HIGHLIGHTED THAT SOME MARINE BIOTA ARE EXPOSED TO HIGH-LEVEL RADIATION DOSES DUE TO NATURAL ALPHA-EMITTERS SPECIALLY PO-210. THEREFORE THE CONSUMPTION OF SEAFOOD NOTICEABLY CONTRIBUTE TO THE RADIATION DOSE TO HUMANS, TO WHICH LONG-LIVED TRANSURANICS RELEASED INTO THE OCEAN WOULD LIKELY ADD. TRANSURANICS RADIATION DOSES TO MAN SHOULD BE COMPARED TO THE NATURAL BACKGROUND ONES, PARTICULARLY THOSE FROM NATURAL ALPHA-EMITTERS. MORE DATA ON THE BEHAVIOUR AND TRANSFER OF NATURAL RADIONUCLIDES CAN BE HELPFUL FOR A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE BEHAVIOUR AND THE TRANSFER OF ANALOG ARTIFICIAL RADIONUCLIDES. FURTHERMORE, DATA ARE LACKING ON CONCENTRATION FACTORS OF ARTIFICIAL AND NATURAL ALPHA-EMITTERS IN DEEP-SEA FISH AND COMMON SEA-FOOD FROM COASTAL AREAS. TO ACHIEVE THESE OBJECTIVES IT IS PROPOSED TO PERFORM THE FOLLOWING RESEARCH:
- MEASUREMENT OF PO-210/PB-210 LEVELS, ENLARGING IT TO OTHER NATURAL ALPHA EMITTERS AS U, TH, RA ISOTOPES IN FISH, CRUSTACEAN AND SHELLFISH FROM COASTAL AREAS AND WHICH ARE SIGNIFICANT IN THE POPULATION DIET,
- MEASUREMENT OF PU-239/240 AND AM-241 IN SOME OF THE SAMPLES EQUALLY ANALYSED FOR THE NATURAL RADIONUCLIDES,
- DETERMINATION FIELD CONCENTRATION FACTORS IN MARINE BIOTA FOR THOSE RADIONUCLIDES IN COASTAL ORGANISMS, GRADUALLY ENLARGING IT TO MID-WATER AND DEEP-SEA ORGANISMS,
- STUDY OF THE BIOPHYSICAL TRANSPORT MECHANISMS AFFECTING THE CYCLING OF PO-210/PB-210, NAMELY FOCUSING THEIR DELIVERY INTO COASTAL WATERS THROUGH THE MAIN PORTUGUESE RIVERS OUTPUT.
