LASER HEATING OF THERMOLUMINESCENT DOSEMETERS:APPLICATION TO THE MEASUREMENT OF LOW-ENERGY BETA RAYS

Objectif

THE OBJECTIVE OF THE WORK IS TO COMPLETE THE UNDERSTANDING OF LASER HEATING OF TLD'S AND TO DEVELOP THE APPLICATION OF THE METHOD FOR DOSIMETRY IN THE LABORATORY. THE EFFORTS ARE FOCUSSED ON THE RESEARCH OF MATERIALS AND STRUCTURES IN ORDER TO FIND THE OPTIMUM FOR MEASUREMENT OF BETA PARTICLES. THE WORK INCLUDES EXPERIMENTAL AND THEORETICAL STUDIES. THE LATTER CONSISTS IN MODELLING OF THE HEATING AND THE LUMINESCENCE. THIS SHOULD FACILITATE TO IDENTIFY THE DEFINITION OF AN IDEAL COMBINATION OF LASER AND DOSIMETER. A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE PERFORMANCES OF CONVENTIONAL READERS AND LASER READERS OF OUR LABORATORY WILL ALSO BE PERFORMED.
Calcium sulphide was used as a thermoluminescent material. Laser heating of the thermoluminescent dosimeters resulted in a sensitive and accurate method for detecting beta particles.
1. PREPARATION OF NEW DOSIMETERS
AT THE CENTRE D'ELECTRONIQUE DE MONTPELLIER WE ARE DEVELOPING A NEW TLD TECHNIQUE USING LASER HEATING FOR SEVERAL YEARS. IMPROVEMENT OF THE DOSIMETERS MAY BE OBTAINED BY VARYING THE KIND OF SUPPORT AND MATERIAL. THE OPTIMISATION OF THE THICKNESS OF THE CHIPS OF THE ORDER OF TENS OF MICRONS IS RELATED ON ONE HAND TO THE DECREASE IN SENSIBILITY WITH THICKNESS ON THE OTHER HAND IN THE FORM OF THE GRAINS OF POWDER WHICH DO NOT PERMIT TO PROVIDE ANY THICKNESS REQUESTED. THE TECHNOLOGY OF REALIZATION OF DISCRETE DOSIMETERS (2X2X0.1 MM3 APPROX.) TO BE PLACED ON THE PLATE (2.2X2.2X0.02 CM3) HAS TO BE DEVELOPED AS WELL. NEW CONFIGURATIONS WILL BE ALSO TESTED: STUDY OF ACTIVE SUPPORTS OTHER THAN GLASS AND OF NEW BLINDING AGENT.

2. IMPROVEMENT OF EXISTING READER
THE TLD READER IS OPERATIONAL AT PRESENT AND ONLY SOME MODIFICATIONS HAVE TO BE INTRODUCED IN PARTICULAR WITH REGARD TO THE CONTROL OF THE OUTPUT OF THE LASER, THE REGISTRATION OF THE SIGNAL AND THE TREATMENT OF THE DATA. THE CONTROL OF THE LASER OUTPUT MUST ALLOW A REPRODUCIBILITY OF 2-3 % ON THE READING OF THE THERMOLUMINESCENCE OF ONE PLATE. THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE STORAGE TECHNIQUE SHOULD ALSO CONTRIBUTE CONSIDERABLY TO THIS GOAL.

3. EVALUATION OF THE LASER READER
A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE PERFORMANCE OF THE LASER READER AND A CONVENTIONAL READER WILL BE PERFORMED WITH THE TEAM OF PROF. F. FERNANDEZ (SERVICIO DE FISICA DE LAS RADIOCIONES, UNIVERSIDAD AUTONOMA DE BARCELONA, SPAIN).

4. BETADOSIMETRY
A SERIES OF MEASUREMENTS WILL BE CARRIED OUT TO STUDY THE RESPONSE OF VARIOUS TLD'S TO X-RAYS AND GAMMA RAYS IN COMPARISON TO RESULTS OBTAINED IN IRRADIATION WITH BETAPARTICLES. PARTICULAR IMPORTANCE IS LAID ON THE INVESTIGATION OF THE ENERGY DEPENDENCE. THIS WORK IS CARRIED OUT IN COLLABORATION WITH STEP (DR. G. PORTAL), CEA, FONTENAY-AUX-ROSES, FRANCE, WHO WILL PERFORM THE IRRADIATIONS.

5. MODELLING OF THE HEATING AND THE THERMOLUMINESCENCE
THIS STUDY HAS BEEN INCLUDED IN OUR RESEARCH SINCE ITS BEGINNING AND WILL BE CONTINUED. THE ALREADY DEVELOPED EFFECTIVE METHOD IS WELL-SUITED FOR A THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL STUDY OF THE ANNEALING CONDITIONS. THE STUDY OF THE INTERACTION OF BETA RADIATION WITH THE DOSIMETER SHOULD FACILITATE THE IDENTIFICATION OF THE IDEAL COMBINATION OF LASER AND DOSIMETER. IN THIS SECTION A CLOSE COLLABORATION WITH THE TEAM OF PROF. F. FERNANDEZ (LABORATORIO DE FISICA DE LAS RADIOCIONES, UNIVERSIDAD AUTONOMA DE BARCELONA, SPAIN) HAS BEEN INSTALLED.

6. INTERACTION OF RADIATION WITH MATERIAL
THESE MEASUREMENTS WILL COMPLEMENT THE DATA WITH REGARD TO THE SUITABILITY OF TLD MATERIALS FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF ABSORBED DOSE DUE TO BETA RADIATION. THE EXPERIMENTS DEAL WITH MEASUREMENTS AFTER IRRADIATIONS WITH ELECTRONS IN THE ENERGY RANGE FROM HUNDREDS OF KEV TO SEVERAL MEV WITH DIFFERENT CHIPS OF LIF, CAF2, LI2B407 AND CASO4:DY.
