BETA RAY DOSIMETRY USING LASER STIMULATED THERMOLUMINESCENCE

Objetivo

THE OBJECTIVE OF THE WORK IS TO COMPLETE THE UNDERSTANDING OF LASER HEATING OF TLD'S AND TO DEVELOP THE APPLICATION OF THE METHOD FOR DOSIMETRY IN THE LABORATORY. OUR EFFORTS ARE FOCUSSED ON THE RESEARCH OF THE SUITABILITY OF MATERIALS AND STRUCTURES FOR THE DOSIMETRY OF RADIATION. THE PLAN OF WORK WILL INCLUDE WORK ON EXPERIMENTAL AND THEORETICAL ASPECTS. WE ARE PLANNING ALSO A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE PERFORMANCES OF THE LASER READER OF THE LABORATORY IN MONTPELLIER WITH A CONVENTIONAL READER.
Studies have been carried out on the reading of thermoluminescent dosimeters by laser heating and its application to beta dosimetry.
This involved: setting up of a Valladas thermoluminescence reading system; manufacturing our own calcium sulphate dysprosium and dosimeters; and studying the response of our dosimeters as a function of the energy, powder grain size and layer thickness.
THE THREE GROUPS INVOLVED IN THE RESEARCH PROGRAMME WILL STUDY DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF THE PROJECT. THE CONTRIBUTION OF EACH GROUP TO THE PROJECT IS GIVEN IN DETAIL BELOW:

C.E.M. MONTPELLIER - PROF GASIOT (FRANCE):
- SET-UP OF A LASER READER FOR THERMOLUMINESCENCE DOSIMETERS. THE ACTUALLY OPERATIONAL READER NEEDS TO BE MODIFIED IN SOME RESPECTS, MAINLY WITH REGARD TO THE CONTROL OF THE LEVEL OF OUTPUT OF THE LASER, THE REGISTRATION OF THE THERMOLUMINESCENCE AND THE TREATMENT OF THE DATA.
- CONTINUATION OF THE STUDY ON THE EFFECTS OF PROPERTIES OF THE THERMOLUMINESCENT MATERIALS SUCH AS LIF, CAF2, LI2B401 AND CASO4:DY ON THE SIGNALS. IN PARTICULAR THE EFFECTS OF THE SIZE OF THE GRAINS AND OF THE THICKNESS OF THE CHIPS WILL BE INVESTIGATED. DEVELOPMENT OF THE TECHNOLOGY FOR PRACTICAL DISCRETE DOSEMETERS (2X2X0.1 MM3). THIS STUDY WILL BE PERFORMED IN COLLABORATION WITH THE SERVICIO DE FISICA DE LAS RADIACIONES, UNIVERSIDAD AUTONOMA DE BARCELONA.
- TEST OF THE RESPONSE OF VARIOUS TLD'S OF OWN PRODUCTION TO X-RAYS AND GAMMA RAYS AND COMPARISON OF THE RESULTS OBTAINED AFTER IRRADIATION WITH BETA-PARTICLES. THIS WORK IS CARRIED OUT IN COLLABORATION WITH STEP (DR. G. PORTAL), CEA FONTENAY-AUX-ROSES, FRANCE, WHO WILL CARRY OUT THE IRRADIATIONS.
- MEASUREMENT AND THEORETICAL MODELLING OF THE TEMPERATURE AND THE THERMOLUMINESCENCE. THIS STUDY WILL BE PERFORMED IN COLLABORATION WITH THE SERVICIO FISICA DE LAS RADIOCIONES, UNIVERSIDAD AUTONOMA DE BARCELONA.

SERVICIO FISICA DE LAS RADIOCIONES, UNIVERSIDAD AUTONOMA DE BARCELONA, SPAIN - PROF. F. FERNANDEZ:
- THEORETICAL MODELLING OF HEATING AND THERMOLUMINESCENCE. THIS WORK HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT BY THE GROUP OF MONTPELLIER SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THIS STUDY AND WILL BE CONTINUED IN COLLABORATION WITH US. THE VERY EFFECTIVE METHOD IS WELL SUITED FOR THE THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL INVESTIGATIONS OF THE ANNEALING CONDITIONS.
- STUDY OF THE INTERACTION OF RADIATION WITH MATTER FOR THE DEVELOPMENT AND OPTIMISATION OF THIS TLD'S SUITABLE FOR LASER HEATING. THIS WORK IS PERFORMED IN COLLABORATION WITH CEM MONTPELLIER.
- EVALUATION OF DOSIMETERS WITH A CONVENTIONAL READER. THE CONVENTIONAL HEATING WILL HELP TO PREPARE THE STUDIES PERFORMED BY MONTPELLIER WITH THE LASER HEATER. WE PROPOSE ALSO IN COLLABORATION WITH CEM MONTPELLIER A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE PERFORMANCES OF THE LASER READER AND THE CONVENTIONAL READER IN OUR LABORATORY.

STEP CEA, FONTENAY-AUX-ROSES - DR. G. PORTAL, FRANCE:
- IRRADIATIONS WITH X-RAYS AND GAMMA RAYS FOR THE TEST OF THE RESPONSE OF DIFFERENT TLD'S PRODUCED BY THE GROUP OF DR. GASIOT. THIS SERIE OF MEASUREMENT MADE AT MONTPELLIER AND BARCELONA WILL COMPLETE THE DATA WITH REGARD TO THE SUITABILITY OF THERMOLUMINESCENT MATERIALS TO MEASURE THE DOSE DUE TO BETA RADIATION. THE EXPERIMENTS DEAL WITH MEASUREMENTS WITH ELECTRONS IN THE ENERGY RANGE FROM HUNDREDS OF KEV TO SEVERAL MEV WITH DIFFERENT CHIPS OF LIF, CAF2, CI2BE407 AND CASO4:DY.

PERIODICAL MEETINGS AND VISITS IN THE DIFFERENT CENTRES WILL ENABLE THE EXCHANGE OF RESULTS OBTAINED.
