A value of life has been proposed based on an extensive study of the literature. This value may be used as an aid to safety investment decision making. It could be used in radiation protection, transport safety, consumer protection, or in decisions involving the safety of major hazard sites. In arriving at this value, problems associated with techniques such as contingent valuation have been considered and incorporated into the final recommendations.
