Our Department is doing research mainly in the field of virus diseases of food animals and pets. We are focussed on developing new vaccines and diagnostic kits. The virus diseases we are currently working on are: foot-and-mouth disease, swine vesicular disease, classical swine fever, bovine virus diarrhoea, porcine respiratory reproductive syndrome virus, influenza virus, canine distemper virus, bovine respiratory syncytial virus, parvovirus of dogs, bovine herpesvirus 1 and pseudorabies. We are using biotechnological methods to develop marker vaccines (ie vaccines that allow us to differentiate infected individuals from vaccinated ones) against most of the above diseases. In addition, companion diagnostic kits are under development. Some vaccines that we developed (usually in cooperation with an industry) are already on the market (eg pseudorabies and bovine herpesvirus marker vaccines). Another vaccine, such as a subunit marker vaccine against classical swine fever is in the preregistration phase and this research is supported by an industry. The development of a marker vaccine against bovine virus diarrhoea virus (BVDV) is supported by an industry as well. We are looking for support for developing marker vaccines against bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV), which is underway, and for marker vaccines against porcine influenza, canine distemper and canine parvovirus. With our research we cover the whole vaccinological field from the nucleotide to the testing of vaccine for efficacy and safety in the target animal.
