Objectif
The European Initiative for Biotechnology Education (EIBE) was launched in 1991 with support from the Commission to address future citizens of school age by supporting the work of their teachers and to enable them to enter into informed public debate. This was done mainly through in-service training (INSET) provision. EIBE is now a trans-European multi- I disciplinary network of proven ability and consists of some 30 experts t in biotechnology and biotechnology education drawn from 20 centres in 12 EU countries. The Key to the proposal, the identification and utilization of good practice and data which are available nationally, followed by development and adaptation to forms that are suitable for use in other member states. Integral to the process will be scientific analysis of cognitive and affective preconditions of students and their teachers, and a programme of effecting and monitoring revision, evaluation, dissemination and implementation of teaching materials. It will be necessary to develop innovative educational materials which will enable scientific and technological aspects of biotechnology to be explored in , the context of relevant economic and societal issues. Emphasis will be placed on the areas of biotechnology which the Commission has indicated for concerted action. The materials will have the teaching of science and non-science syllabuses in mind.
Implementation of the material will be monitored and evaluated; any obstacles to their implementation will be investigated. Information collected will be pooled and recorded on databases with a view to being made widely available. Dissemination will be achieved by expanding the existing EIBE trans-European network through both conventional and innovative means. The former will include the organization of conferences with key persons for biotechnology education in the different countries, the development of a newsletter and the publication of articles on E.I.B.E.'s work; the latter will involve exploitation of electronic means as a ready way of sending and receiving information including an additional mechanism for dissemination of materials.
E.I.B.E. believes that by its expertise and relevant managerial experience and the enhancement that transnational collaboration has brought to its past work, dialogue and openness about biotechnology will be encouraged and public understanding of biotechnology will be supported to the ultimate benefit of the EU.
