Objectif
This project will provide information services for biological and biotechnological research. It has the EMBL Data Library at its core, and enhances its European dimension through the inclusion of three other strong European partners.
The Nucleotide Sequence Database, maintained in collaboration with US and Japanese collaborators, will be the largest activity within the project, and it will be accompanied by other specialist sequence databases for EST, STS and CpG island data. The ability to explore this information will be enhanced by the incorporation of a structured system of keywords which will be developed by the AREABA partner.
The close collaboration between EMBL and the University of Geneva in the production of the SWISS-PROT database will continue, and SWISSPROT's usefulness will be enhanced by specialist databases for immunoglobulins, artificial sequences and putative translations of open reading frames.
New initiatives in the project will be the EBI's involvement as the European partner in the global provision of macromolecular structure information and the development at the EBI of a repository for radiation hybrid data. The partner InfoBiogen will develop software to integrate the latter with other kinds of information, and to visualise such information.
The databases described and many other specialist collections will be distributed by the EBI on CD-ROMs and, in collaboration with the EMBnet project, over computer networks. The DKFZ's work on the Integrated Genome Database will be exploited to make human data available in an integrated way from the EBI, while work at the DKFZ will extend this functionality to other key organisms.
In collaboration with the EMBnet project user support and training at all levels will be provided with hypertext documentation being available over the networks.
This crucial contribution to bioinformatics infrastructure will have obvious scientific benefits in biology, biotechnology, medicine and all the life sciences, and will be accompanied by indirect benefits in areas such as agriculture, the environment and the economy in general. The project will also stimulate development in the software and publishing industries. These information services are made available throughout the world at nominal (or zero) cost allowing widespread exploitation of the knowledge represented in the databases, promoting European development and maintenance of cutting-edge information resources.
