The object of EMMA is the collection of precious mouse mutant stocks, cryopreservation, and banking and to redistribute the frozen mouse stocks to the European scientific community. Another objective for the repository such as EMMA is that others, i.e. the recipient laboratories and their associated organizations, will use the mutant mice in the repository for research and development of new drugs and treatments. The primary and major objective, as well as deliverable, for this project is to provide a fully and internationally respected repository. The work includes shipping of frozen mouse stocks and realization of a network for cryopreservation, banking and redistribution of mouse stocks. For this the repository network needs to keep adequate animal facilities with adequately trained staff and with veterinarian supervision for the handling and housing of the mice. The work includes shipping of frozen mouse stocks. Adequate provision of ethical, safety and other regulations will be an important task. Furthermore, the project includes the on-going update and maintenance of the EMMA Resource Database (Website: http://www.EMMA.rm.cnr.it/) and its functional coupling with the expanding information related to the EMMA banked stocks. The EMMA network, at its full capacity, will enable the cryopreservation of up to 250 valuable mutant stocks and the delivery of up to 500 frozen stocks to the European scientific community per year. Depending on the development of improved sperm freezing and reconstitution techniques, the numbers of stocks handled could be higher. EMMA will also organize courses to disseminate the techniques relevant to its objectives.
