BIOGAS TREATMENT UNIT WITH A REMOVABLE BED FILTER SYSTEM FOR THE ABSORPTION OF SULPHYDRIC ACID

Objective

The aim of the project is to demonstrate an improved device for the continuous removal of sulphydric acid, H2S, from biogas produced during the stabilization of sewage sludge so as to enable its further safe end-use in cogeneration units.
The removal of H2S from the biogas has given good results; the H2S content is reduced from a mean value of 2,300 ppm at the filter inlet to a mean value of 270 ppm at the outlet while the sulfur absorbed represents 30% of the iron agglomerate weight on average.
The main problem encountered has been the hydrogen sulphide detection cell which has had to be replaced several times without complete success as far as the reliability of the results was concerned. This circumstance obliged, on the one hand, to extend the demonstration period and, on the other hand, to perform manual follow-up and control of the biogas H2S content.

Figures for one complete year of operation are the following :
- biogas purified : 201 600 m3.
- electricity produced : 302,400 kWh totally consumed on the sewage plant
- heat produced : 95 TOE of which 14 TOE are used for the digester heating
- TOTEM co-generators factor load : 90%
- payback time calculated at 2.5 years.
System consists basically in a chute-type 1 m3 capacity filter containing ferric oxides agglomerate material. Innovation lies in the filtering material configuration based on an oxide layer stuck on a light and porous base-material surface. Oxides are obtained in granular fine consistency and enable an over than a 20 % sulphur absorption in weight, owing to a regenerating system. Furthermore, this pellet-shaped agglomerate material could allow automatic operation in both loading unloading of filter active content.
Basic layout would consist of a 1 m3 capacity filtering unit with loading and unloading chutes both 0. 14 m3 capacity, provided of special gastight automatic valves. Owing to the biogas flow-rate and its H2S content, a periodical and partial reloading of absorption material (ferric oxide based) will be completed so as to keep the filter in good operating conditions.
The purified biogas is used in 4 TOTEM-FIAT cogeneration units, each of which has a 12.5 kW electric powerand a 36.8 kW heat capacity.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
