Objective
This project aims at employing a fluidised bed furnace fired with wood or wood/coal, to produce hot gases to be used in a spray dryer which currently uses a gas (propane) fired burner. Utilisation of wood wastes which can be considered as an indigeneous fuel will help serve to reduce the gas consumption.
The system is such that change to firing to either fuel can be achieved at any required moment without any need to interrupt the process.
Each furnace module comprises of a fluidised bed combustion chamber, a start-up pilot flame burner and associated safety control system, a fluidising air distributor, a coal feed system or a wood feed system and a bed removal system. Suitable steps and platforms are provided for access to sight glasses and furnace acccess doors as found necessary.
The combustion chamber is refractory lined; it is divided into 2 compartments, separated by a refractory wall. There is interchange of the bed material between the 2 compartments through slots placed on the wall of separation.
The horizontal screw conveyors are installed at the base of the chamber to allow removal of the bed material when the bed hieght exceeds certain limit in order to increase the overpressure. The bed extraction screws are water cooled.
2 air distributors will be installed which will provide all the fluidising air to both compartments of the fluidised bed.
The start-up procedure consists of premixing propane and the fluidising air in the windbox and passing the flue gases resulting from the combustion through the nozzles in the distributor plate. The mixture is ignited by a ignition arch located in the wind box.
The burner is equipped with a flame sensor which ensures the existence of the flame. If not, the process control coupled with the flame detector acts to shut off the main propane supply line. On the propane supply line, there is also a non-return valve incorporated. The bottom side of the distributor plate is insulated and the temperature in the windbox is constantly monitored.
