A 27 MWE REFUSE DERIVED FUEL (RDF) GASIFICATION PLANT AT ANO LIOSIA

Objective

To design, construct and operate a 27 MWe net RDF gasification plant for the energetic utilisation of the RDF produced by two MSW recycling plants. The project also aims to demonstrate the technical and economic viability of the TPS circulating fluidized bed gasification technology for large scale projects as a competitive alternative to landfilling and incineration. The gasification plant will be integrated in a Total MSW Management Facility at Ano Liosia and will be an integral part of the energy related installation (other include landfill gas, and biogas from anaerobic digestion). The gasification island will provide more than 53% of the electricity produced from the facility at Ano Liosia. This plant will be the first thermochemical conversion facility for waste ever built in Greece.
The vast majority of the MSW stream in Western Attika is landfilled in the Municipality of Ano Liosia, which is located about 14 km Northwest from the centre of Athens. Currently this landfill receives 3600 tonnes of MSW per day. The surface area of the site related to MSW disposal operations is approximately 500000m² constituting one of the largest operational landfills in the EU. The Ano Liosia landfill receives very high priority in terms of ameliorating the environmental pressures.
At present the following units are operational and/or planned at the site:
- The rehabilitation of the existing landfill (already contracted),
- The extension of the rehabilitation of the existing landfill (already contracted),
- The planned sanitary landfill (already contracted),
- The planned resource separation for the treatment of 1200 t/d; about 1/3 of the total input (already contracted),
- The planned aerobic composting unit (already contracted).

The RDF is fed into the gasification system through two parallel feeding lines. The fuel feeding system consists of a live bottom fuel bin, extraction screws, weigh belt conveyors, and rotary feeders in series. To prevent back-flow of fuel gas into the feeding system, the fuel feeding system is pressurised by using an inert gas or air.
The TPS gasifier is of CFB type and operates at close to atmospheric pressure and typically between 850 and 900°C, using air as gasification/fluidising agent. The gasifier is a cylindrical refractory-lined vessel. The energy required for the process is supplied by simultaneous partial al gas cleaning equipment. Downstream of the tar cracker the gas is cooled to approx. 200°C before it enters the baghouse filters.
The 'clean' product gas leaving the filter is fired in an adjacent boiler. The steam generated will be at 60 bar and 510°C.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
